Shades of The Past

Last week I asked about your “Retirement Toys”.

Over the last weekend I took my “toy”, the SLK, to Gatlinburg.

September is the time of two large car events in Pigeon Forge. The Shades of the Past Hod Rod Round Up last weekend and the Grand Rod Run next weekend.

The Shades of the Past Hod Rod Roundup in Pigeon Forge is a love / hate event for me.

I love to see the hundreds old restored or customized cars.

I hate what it does to traffic in Pigeon Forge.

It can take hours to go from one end of Pigeon Forge to the other.

However, lined up along both sides of the roadway for miles, are some of the most incredible cars you could ever want to see.

There were restored cars, hot rods, muscle cars, specialty cars, and every thing in-between.

I saw a restored ’32 Packard for $185,000. Lots and lots of ’55, ’56, and ’57 Chevrolets. Not to mention almost every year of Corvette.

I parked at one end of town and started walking towards the other. I never made it. In three days I probably only saw about half of the cars.

Here is a look at some of the cars.

Do you have a "retirement toy" ?

Did you get a "retirement toy"? Or, do you have time to play with your "toys" now that you are retired?

I haven't retired yet, however I am working less and playing more. My retirement "toy" is a SLK 280 convertible I got to drive on the hard packed sands of Daytona Beach. Then I sold the Daytona condo. Still, it's a great ride. And a great toy.

I know many of CHS '60 classmates have been hit by the downturn in the economy. But, I know many, like me, bought their "toys" before the current "doom and gloom" economy. So, I asked Juanita to email the class and have them send me some pics of their favorites. Some did. Most didn't.

Maybe they're like me. Haven't retired yet. No time for "toys". Or maybe it's as simple as not being able to figure out how to email a picture.

Anyway, if you have a "toy" (it doesn't have to be expensive to be fun) how about emailing a picture to NormanRMiller@yahoo.com and I will share it with the class. If you can't figure out how to send that pic, email me a story about your toy and I'll post it on the blog.
